What is the best e-reader?

And which one has the best value for money?

NU.nl and the Consumers' Association answer.

An e-reader is ideal for on the go.

You have an entire library in your pocket, without having to carry around piles of books.

With an e-reader you can of course read from a screen, but it is not comparable with, for example, a tablet.

An e-reader is much calmer for your eyes, more like a real book.

In addition, the battery of an e-reader often lasts a long time on a single charge.

The Consumers' Association tests e-readers for, among other things, screen quality, ease of use and reading experience.

A total of nineteen e-readers have been tested that are readily available.

An e-reader from Pocketbook comes out as Best in the Test.

Due to the favorable price, this model is also the Best Buy.

An e-reader from Tolino also scores well, but is slightly more expensive.

It is only Best in the Test.

This Pocketbook e-reader has been on the market since 2020, but still offers great value for money.

It comes out very well in the test and is also favorably priced.

It is equipped with WiFi and has just under 6.5 GB of storage.

The touch screen of the Pocketbook is 6 inches.

The text is sharp and easy to read.

You can illuminate the screen and the brightness remains good, even in less light.

The e-reader is thin and light and the housing is partly made of rubber.

It fits comfortably in the hand.

The buttons work nicely and you can adjust the functions of the buttons as desired.

The battery lasts a very long time.

On a full charge you can use it for an average of 26 days (based on about two hours of use per day).

It also has a few drawbacks.

The screen is less resistant to scratches.

In addition, unlike most tested e-readers, it is not waterproof.

The Tolino Vision 5 has been on the market since 2019, but it still beats many newer competitors.

It has WiFi and more than 5.5 GB of storage space.

The Tolino's touch screen is slightly larger than average at 7 inches.

The screen is good and the text is crystal clear.

You can also illuminate the screen with this model.

The brightness adjusts to the time of day, but you can also adjust it to your liking.

Just like the Pocketbook, this e-reader lies comfortably in the hand.

The construction is sturdy, waterproof up to 2 meters deep and can take a beating.

The controls work well and you can set the buttons per position.

It has a good battery that lasts about fifteen days on a full charge.

A disadvantage is that it is somewhat limited in the number of functions.

For example, you cannot convert text to speech or play audio.

In this column we write weekly about household and technological appliances that have been tested by the Consumers' Association.

This is a collaboration between the independent editors of NU.nl and the Consumers' Association.

The Consumers' Association tests thousands of products every year, together with qualified technicians in specialized laboratories at home and abroad.

The products being tested are store bought so they are not pre-manipulated by manufacturers.

New models are tested as soon as possible after introduction.

How fast that is varies per product.

The Best in Test is the product with the best test rating.

This can also be a somewhat older model, because a newer model is not always better.

The Best Buy is the product with the best value for money.
