• Security A cyberattack knocks down the services of several city councils in Spain

  • SEPE Work already controls "almost all" its computers after the cyberattack last Wednesday and continues to investigate the origin

With the boost to digitization due to the pandemic, this

2021 has also been a year of growth for cyberattacks

, with several notable incidents that have affected from public organizations to technology manufacturers and large companies.

According to Data101,

only in Spain there are an average of 40,000 cyberattacks every day during this 2021, which represents an increase of 125 percent

compared to last year.

In order to raise awareness about the importance of protecting information and the tools that manage it,

every November 30 is celebrated the International Day of Information Security.

Taking advantage of the anniversary, the IEBS Business School online training digital school has collected

the most impactful cybersecurity attacks of 2021 in Spain.

The first one collected is the one that affected the

State Public Employment Service (SEPE), the

entity in charge of managing unemployment benefits, which was a victim on March 9.

His computer system was paralyzed for days preventing access to his website, which caused the delay in the management of hundreds of thousands of appointments throughout the country and caused thousands of people to suffer delays in their unemployment benefits.

This attack was carried out with the

Ryuk ransomware

, which has been causing damage to companies for years.

Another major incident was suffered by the

Taiwanese technology manufacturer Acer

also in March, when it experienced a 'ransomware' attack.

The criminals, who infected their systems, asked for one of the biggest ransoms requested to date: 50 million dollars, in exchange for decrypting the files that had been encrypted.

In addition, those responsible for the attack shared some images of certain stolen files as evidence.

The company itself

did not rule out that its users' data had fallen into the hands of cybercriminals

.

The Spanish digital home purchase and delivery company

Glovo

is the victim of the third cyberattack reported by IEBS Business School.

The company made public that on April 29 it had suffered unauthorized access to its systems through an old interface of the administration panel.

In fact, Forbes magazine assured that the 'hacker' had put access to the data of customer and delivery accounts up for sale on the Internet, with the potential to modify the password of said accounts.

Despite the fact that

no bank or particularly sensitive details were disclosed

, the affected data was not properly encrypted.

Phone House

also experienced one of the most prominent attacks in Spain in 2021. The company suffered a cyber attack on

April 11

that exposed sensitive data of millions of customers of the telecommunications service chain.

The attack

was carried out using 'ransomware'

and, according to a note left by cybercriminals on the Dark Web, information from more than 3 million consumers was stolen in exchange for a ransom.

In the case of not being paid, apart from being published, they would be sent both to Phone House's partners and to the competition itself.

Returning to public institutions, another of the most notorious cyberattacks of the year has been that of the town councils of some Spanish cities.

Hackers attacked the cloud hosting company ASAC on May 8, leaving the systems and web pages of cities such as Fuenlabrada, Oviedo or Vinarós offline, among other services.

The organizations affected also included the Court of Accounts and the National Security Council (CNS).

The criminals managed to encrypt part of the systems and introduce the 'ransomware' Zeppelin, although in this case the confidentiality of the data could be preserved.

At the beginning of November, in full preparation for the Black Friday campaign, again a

'ransomware' attack blocked MediaMarkt's servers

, as a result of which its stores in Spain, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands were affected.

According to a leaked internal mail,

there were more than 3,000 Windows systems affected

by this cyberattack, in addition to blocking all web operations, for which employees were asked to disconnect their computers.

In some cases, this disconnection directly affected the cash registers, directly connected to the servers.

Although digitization represents great strides for organizations, exposure to cyberattacks has increased along with it.

Phishing and ransomware threats are the most common today, according to an IBM study.

Since March 2020,

these scams have increased by 6,000 percent worldwide

.

In addition, according to data from CheckPoint, a new organization becomes a victim every ten seconds around the world.

"In this new digitalized world, security in organizations has become a key element, not only in order to comply with legal requirements, but also to maintain the good reputation of the company by protecting private and confidential data", explains Oscar Fuente , director and founder of IEBS Business School.
