Archaeologists at the University of San Marcos in Peru recently made a beautiful discovery: a mummy tied up in a fetal position.

Aged 800 to 1,200 years, this deceased was buried in the center of the archaeological city of Cajamarquilla, 15 km from Lima, reports CNN, relayed by

Le Figaro

.

This pre-Columbian mummy was found in an underground tomb.

"We found evidence of regular activity in the tomb after the funeral deposit", including mollusks and llama bones, explains archaeologist Pieter Van Dalen Luna, who took part in the excavations.

“This means that relatives of the deceased had continued for many years to place food offerings.

An important discovery

The specialists were surprised to make such a discovery in the center of a square, in the heart of a very important commercial site in this area of the pre-Columbian Andes.

“The whole team was celebrating, we really didn't think we would make such an important discovery,” said Yomira Huamán Santillán, co-head of the excavations.

All the clues collected on the spot lead archaeologists to believe that the deceased, aged 25 to 30 at the time of his death, was a person of a certain importance.

From now on, this mummy will again be examined at carbon 14 in order to refine its dating and will be studied at length.
