In Danyang, North Chungcheong Province, a driver was arrested on suspicion of running a highway with a dog hanging from a vehicle.

The Danyang Police Station in North Chungcheong Province announced yesterday (15th) that it is investigating a driver A in his 60s for violating the Animal Protection Act.

Person A is suspected of driving a dog with a dog hung in the loading box of his SUV near the Danyang Eight Scenery Service Area in the Busan direction of the Jungang Expressway, Jeokseong-myeon, Danyang-gun, around 4 pm on the 27th of last month.

During the police investigation, Mr. A said, "Not long after entering the North Danyang IC, the car behind me sounded the horn and stopped the car, and the dog was hanging." he stated.

Mr. A's dog suffered a scratch on its hind leg and is being treated, fortunately, it is known that it is not life-threatening.

Police said, "At the time, the vehicle ran at a speed of more than 100 km/h, but seeing that the dog was fine, it seems that the time it hung on the car was short. It seems that it was dragged about 1 km."

"We plan to investigate the exact circumstances of the incident against Mr.

Earlier, Animal Rights Action Kara, an animal protection group, posted a video of the situation at the time on social media and urged a thorough investigation into Mr.

KARA's representative said, "On a highway with cars running at a speed of 100 km/h, citizens found a dog being dragged with its neck hanging behind the car. There were even traces of it,” he wrote.

He continued, "In Korea, when a similar incident occurs, if the driver makes an excuse to say 'I didn't know', there are many cases where the driver is acquitted because there is no intentionality, or the case ends with only mild punishment." We need the attention of many people to ensure that drivers are given a fair punishment,” he added.

According to the Animal Protection Act, inflicting physical pain or injury on an animal is punishable by imprisonment for up to two years or a fine not exceeding 20 million won.
