If the engines of cars and transmissions have known a lot of progress since their creation, the brakes have not undergone any major changes since the ABS.

The Italian company Brembo, specializing in high-end brakes, however wants to kick in the anthill by offering a new braking system based on “intelligent” algorithms.

Called “Sensify”, Brembo's system is able to manage each wheel of a car independently.

Its creators promise "the pleasure of driving and total safety".

Brembo claims that Sensify's algorithm is able to recognize dangerous situations and can learn a driver's reactions to intervene accordingly.

A new braking system

In today's cars, the brake system works by uniform pressure of the brake pads on each wheel.

This pressure is applied through a hydraulic circuit.

The ABS system then makes driving safer by preventing the brakes from locking up and causing the car to lose its grip.

Sensify for its part, manages the braking thanks to two control units distributed on each axle.

They are able to apply a different force to each wheel to optimize braking.

The hydraulic circuit is replaced by electromechanical actuators.

Brembo says this helps increase the responsiveness and control of the vehicle.

The manufacturer explains that this system makes it possible to greatly reduce the loss of adhesion and consequently the blockages which cause the intervention of the ABS.

Increase the life of the equipment

The system is able to adapt to the temperature of the brake discs.

If a disc is too hot, for example, the software distributes the braking force among the other three wheels.

This greatly reduces the wear of the pads and discs and thus prolongs their service life, at the same time reducing maintenance costs.

In the case of a truck, for example, which is generally subjected to significant loads and whose weight varies according to its merchandise, this system would make it possible to achieve significant savings.

At first, however, only high-end vehicles will benefit from this technology.

The company says, however, that Sensify can work on all types of cars and hopes to expand its system in the future.

No manufacturer has yet been communicated, but the new braking system should be marketed from 2024.
