We succeeded in arresting the suspect in the voice phishing collection book after a taxi driver noticed a passenger in a taxi carrying a bundle of money.

The Dobong Police Station in Seoul announced on the 22nd that they are investigating a man in his 40s as a suspect in the collection of voice phishing books.

At the time of the incident, the amount of damage caused by voice phishing carried by Mr. A was found to be about 9.8 million won in cash.

According to the police, at around 5:20 pm on the same day, a 112 report was received saying, "A fellow taxi driver is going to Chang-dong with a passenger suspected of being a voice phishing collection company."

A taxi driver carrying Mr. A in Dobong-gu district judged that Mr. A was suspicious of Mr. A riding in a taxi with a large amount of cash in his shopping bag and reported this to a group chat room with fellow taxi drivers.

A taxi driver in the chat room called 911 and the police started tracking them.

The Changdong District, which has jurisdiction, dispatched 3 patrol cars and 7 police officers to find the taxi about 10 minutes after receiving the report, and is known to have arrested Mr. A in front of the ATM.

It is said that Mr. A was caught by the police right before he sent money to the cannon bankbook.

A merchant near a bank ATM who witnessed the situation at the time said, "The police came and there were a lot of people, but the taxi driver left 'cool' (leaving the suspect passenger)."

Person A, a Korean national, was found to have stated that he did not know that he was a voice phishing collector, saying, "I only knew that he was a part-timer with a large amount of money collecting cash from a financial-related company."

The police are investigating whether A had any intention to commit a crime.

The police plan to pursue the voice phishing chief, but the account that Mr. A was trying to remit is a cannon bankbook and the chief is often in China, so the investigation is not expected to be easy.

However, since the collection book was caught before remittance, if the victim is found, the amount of damage can be returned.

A police official said, "We plan to quickly identify the victim and return the money secured."

This is a 'news pick'.
