Danny Noppert had an excellent start to the European Championship darts in Salzburg on Friday.

In the opening round, De Fries defeated the thirteenth seed Krzysztof Ratajski 6-2 in legs.

Thirty-year-old Noppert and fourteen-year-old Ratajski kept pace in the opening phase of the match, but in the fifth leg the Dutchman hit the decisive break.

He threw out a finish of 24 and won the next three legs.

In the next round, Noppert, who so far has always been stranded in the opening round of the European Championship, will face the winner of the match between fourth-seeded Michael Smith and Ryan Searle.

More than a week ago, Noppert made his international breakthrough by reaching the semi-finals of the prestigious World Grand Prix.

On his way to the last four he impressively defeated his compatriot Michael van Gerwen.

In the end Jonny Clayton was a size too big for the Frisian in the semifinals.

Van Gerwen will play for the first time at the European Championship darts later in the day.

The three-time world champion will take on the Croatian Boris Krcmar.

If he wins, the Brabant player will face the winner of the match between James Wade and Adam Smith-Neale.

At the European Darts Championship, the 32 players who collect the most prize money on the European Tour are welcome.

Because only two European tournaments have been completed due to the corona pandemic, many top players are missing in Salzburg, including Dirk van Duijvenbode and Dimitri Van den Bergh.

The quarterfinals, semifinals and final will be played next Sunday.
