The moving news is that a firefighter in Busan has donated his hematopoietic stem cells to a leukemia patient.

The protagonist of the good deed is Kim Min-jae, a firefighter who works at the Hwamyeong 119 Safety Center at the Busan Bukbu Fire Station.

Firefighter Kim donated his hematopoietic stem cells on the 29th of last month after receiving a call from the blood donor house where he had registered his wish to donate that there was a person with the same genotype as a leukemia patient.

Hematopoietic stem cells, called 'mother cells', are the cells that make all blood cells, including white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets, and are useful in treating intractable blood diseases, including leukemia.

Transplantation requires the HLA genotype to match between the patient and the donor, and the odds of matching are very low, only 1 in 20,000.

The donor needs to be hospitalized for 3 to 4 days, and blood collection takes 3 to 4 hours.

Firefighter Kim, who became a firefighter in 2019, decided to donate hematopoietic stem cells due to the influence of his wife, who works as a nurse in the hematopoietic stem cell transplantation room at the Children's Hospital.

I registered as a donor after hearing the story of young children who should be running around and having fun in the hospital's clean room.

Firefighter Kim said, "I thought that hesitating when a request for help came is like a firefighter who finds a person to be rescued and passes by. .

Meanwhile, Firefighter Kim also pledged to donate all organs in the event of corneal and brain death through the Organ Donation Movement Headquarters of Love.

This is a 'news pick'.
