What is the best 16 inch or larger laptop?

And which one has the best value for money?

NU.nl and the Consumers' Association answer.

Laptops of 16 inches or larger are less popular these days.

Manufacturers also make fewer models in this format.

The declining demand is also understandable, because they are often too large and heavy to easily carry around.

Nevertheless, there are people who prefer a laptop with a larger screen, for example for a home workplace.

The Consumers' Association tests different laptop sizes for speed, screen quality, hardware and ease of use.

A total of 133 laptops have been tested that are still available.

Please note: due to the increased demand due to corona, availability is more limited than usual.

Within the category 16 inches and larger, an Acer laptop comes out as Best in the Test.

This model is favorably priced and is therefore also the Best Buy at the same time.

A laptop from Lenovo scores just as well as the Acer, but is a lot more expensive.

You can rightly call this Acer laptop a good boy.

It is large and above all very heavy (2.65 kg) - not a laptop that you easily carry in your bag.

But if you don't have to carry around much with the laptop, it's a great choice.

The value for money is very good.

The speed is good and it has a lot of RAM (16 GB).

Partly due to the fast hard disk (SSD), it boots in just ten seconds.

So nice and fast.

It has a matte screen with a resolution of up to 1,920x1,080 pixels.

The color reproduction and contrast are excellent.

Only the maximum brightness leaves something to be desired.

The battery is very good.

With light use (simple tasks), you can work no less than 10.5 hours on a full battery.

The laptop has three USB 3 connections, two of which are USB-C.

Best in Test: Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro 16ACH6 (82L5005SMH)

  • Target price: 1,149 euros

  • Test verdict: 7.6

  • Screen size: 16 inch

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 5800H

  • Total hard drive capacity: 512 GB

This laptop from Lenovo scores the same score as the Acer.

It's a great laptop, but it's a lot more expensive.

In terms of price-quality ratio, it is therefore considerably less than the Acer.

This Lenovo model has 16 GB of internal RAM, just like the Acer.

It boots up a little slower than the Acer (thirteen seconds), but once you boot up, the Lenovo wins out on speed.

And it has more computing power.

The screen is matte and has a maximum resolution of 2,560x1,600 pixels.

The color reproduction and the contrast of the screen are more than adequate, but the maximum brightness is also fine.

There is nothing wrong with the battery.

With a full battery you can work for about ten hours with light use.

In total, the laptop has three USB connections, including two USB 3 ports.

Of these two USB 3 connections, one is a USB-C port.

In this column we write weekly about household and technological appliances that have been tested by the Consumers' Association.

This is a collaboration between the independent editors of NU.nl and the Consumers' Association.

The Consumers' Association tests thousands of products every year, together with qualified technicians in specialized laboratories at home and abroad.

The products being tested are store bought so they are not pre-manipulated by manufacturers.

New models are tested as soon as possible after introduction.

How fast that is varies per product.

The Best in Test is the product with the best test rating.

This can also be a somewhat older model, because a newer model is not always better.

The Best Buy is the product with the best value for money.
