In the fall, Apple introduces the latest iPhones and the new Apple Watch.

Due to the corona, the event again only took place virtually.

A first inspection of the products by journalists and bloggers has not yet been possible.

After the iPhone 12 comes the iPhone 13. This is no triviality, it could have been an iPhone 12 S because the improvements represent a facelift rather than a fundamental redesign.

Until now, this was what the "S" stood for.

The iPhone 12 brought a new, striking design and support for the 5G cellular standard. The iPhone 13 remains true to this design and, as usual, the new device comes in four sizes: as the iPhone 13 Mini with a 5.4-inch display, as the iPhone 13 with a 6.1-inch screen, and as the 13 Pro in the same size , but with a better camera and as a top device 13 Pro Max.

The camera recess on the upper edge of the display has become smaller. The faster A15 processors and the display are new. The higher quality iPhones Pro use a Super Retina XDR display with a brightness of up to 1000 nits. From a technical point of view, the self-name is based on an LTPO display, the abbreviation stands for low temperature polycrystalline oxide. This is a kind of OLED display with significantly lower power consumption and variable and dynamic refresh rates. Apple takes full advantage of the technology and promises a refresh rate of up to 120 Hertz, which offers better transitions and animations. It is also possible that the darkened display shows some information such as time or battery level permanently. But no such thing was announced.

Apple has given the two Pro models a bezel made of stainless steel instead of aluminum. Every year Apple highlights the faster processor in its new releases. Like its predecessor A14, the new A15 is based on six ARM cores and has 15 billion transistors. The system's improved “neural engine” can perform billions of arithmetic tasks per second. There is no faster smartphone, Apple says with a certain pride, but that was also true of the iPhone 12. 5G is supported with more frequencies and more cellular operators around the world. The battery life should be significantly longer than the previous models thanks to the more efficient processor.

The camera of the iPhone 13 Mini and iPhone 13 has a diagonally arranged double lens. The Pro models use triple optics and also have a lidar sensor. The abbreviation stands for "Light Detection and Ranging", in which the surroundings are scanned with a laser beam. Autonomous cars use the same to get an idea of their surroundings. In the iPhone and iPad Pro, the lidar has proven itself in all augmented reality applications, and the autofocus is faster, especially in low light. The three cameras of the Pro models have been fundamentally revised. The support of macro shots with distances of two centimeters or more is new.

For the first time, the new devices have a “cinematic mode” with a portrait mode and an adjustment of the depth of field of the background, as is already built into the photo department. Cinematic mode works largely automatically with artificial intelligence. The focus point can also be moved manually. Apple has significantly improved the ultra-wide-angle camera and made it more powerful. All 13 models receive image stabilization with sensor shift technology, which was previously only available for the Pro Max.
