In 2017, the apparently promising and charismatic neurosurgeon Christopher Duntsch (Montana, 1971) was accused of mutilating one of his patients during his intervention in a hospital in Dallas (USA). For this, he was sentenced to life imprisonment, a sentence he is currently serving. That was not the only crime this sinister doctor committed: throughout his short career at Baylor Regional Medical Center hospital in Plano (Texas), where he arrived in 2011 with a salary of more than $ 600,000 a year, Duntsch was accused of having left some 33 patients badly wounded or mutilated, two tetraplegics and as many dead while he was operating on them. Due to

his malpractice, he earned the nickname of Dr Death

(Dr Death)

among his peers

.

The shocking true story of the young ex-surgeon is now made into fiction in

the miniseries

Dr Death

, which premieres on the Starzplay platform

this Sunday, September 12. Based on the successful podcast of the same name, produced by the North American chain of Wondery, which focuses on serious cases of medical malpractice, the first chapter begins with the statements before a judge of the state of Texas of patients who have hairs and signs of the atrocities committed by the doctor. During the following episodes (

eight in total

), which Starzplay will publish every Sunday, reveals how the apparently brilliant (and arrogant) Duntsch leaves a trail of victims behind him without even acknowledging his miscalculations: "I'm never wrong, I'm the best", arrives to assure a patient with his captivating smile, minutes before intervening for a hernia and leaving her brain dead.

Are you clueless and incompetent, despite your credentials and good references at other hospitals, or are you doing it on purpose? Is he a sociopath with a sinister plan? Those are the questions the viewer will ask themselves as they watch Duntsch perform, as do his fellow doctors in the hospitals where he works, who do not understand how, one after another, the patients who enter his operating room for routine (and simple) spine surgeries are mutilated for life ... or even dead. As the negligence accumulates, doctors, nurses, assistants, a lawyer and some patients try to stop him and prevent him from continuing to operate, alerting the state medical board, which, incomprehensibly, is reluctant to disqualify him in the face of the disbelief and impotence of the victims .

Alec Baldwin (left) and Christian Slater, two of the series' protagonists.

The series has been described as

one of the

true crimes

of the moment

. The tension caused by the scenes in the operating room and the empathy that is achieved with the patients themselves,

is joined by a luxury cast led by Joshua Jackson

(

Little Fires Everywhere, The Affair

,

Dawson grows

...), who plays the attractive and narcissistic doctor. He is joined in this production by

Alec Baldwin

, as neurosurgeon Robert Henderson,

Christian Slater

, the histrionic vascular surgeon Randall Kirby, and AnnaSophia Robb (

The Act, Little Fires Everywhere

), as Dallas prosecutor Michelle Shugart.

The story, which hooks from minute one, explores the twisted mind of a doctor with a god complex (and dyslexic) and the failures of a system that, in theory, should protect the most defenseless (in this case, patients) , but that, however, does not.

Directed by an all-female team that includes Maggie Kiley (

Riverdale

or

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

) and Jennifer Morrison (

Euphoria

), among others,

Dr Death

has been produced by UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group.
