The tech giants have been successful in “the war” against terrorism.

Microsoft, Amazon, Google, Facebook and Twitter have received more than 44 billion dollars thanks to contracts signed with the American government within the framework of the "war" carried out after the attacks of September 11, 2001, estimates a report published by a group militant associations.

The report, released Friday by three activist movements (Action Center on Race and the Economy, MPower Change and LittleSis), details how several US agencies and departments have increasingly used these technological behemoths for more than 15 years.

“Between 2004 and today, the Big Tech giants have seen federal demand for their services soar, especially from the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security,” say the authors.

Big tech companies like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft have made trillions of dollars off of America's global war machine.

Amazon has increased the number of contracts by almost 5 and Microsoft by 8

"Amazon and Microsoft have stood out in recent years, Amazon multiplying by nearly 5 and Microsoft by 8 the number of their contracts (and subcontracts) in 2019 compared to 2015", they continue.

The military contracts signed by Microsoft were thus multiplied by almost 6 between 2016 and 2018, benefiting in particular from the benevolence of the Trump administration, specifies the report.

On the Amazon side, "86% of contracts (and subcontracts) with the government since 2004 have been signed with agencies having a central role in the global war against terrorism", assure the authors.

Google and, to a lesser extent, Twitter, are also cited for their links with Defense.

Underestimated figures

Since 2004, the Pentagon has spent $ 43.8 billion to procure the services of American tech giants, followed by the Department of Homeland Security (348 million), the State Department (258 million), the administration of general services (244 million) and the Department of Justice (138 million), details the report.

The main data was collected through Tech Inquiry, a site listing US government contracts on the open access database.

The authors of the report believe, however, that the figures are lower than the total amount, as many contracts are not made public.
