Almost half a century ago, Ingmar Bergman captured with his camera the
collapse of a marriage
with a precision so great as to make the viewer doubt whether their relationship was good, bad ... or imperfect. Now, some time later,
Secrets of a marriage
arrives
, the
remake
of that miniseries
(later turned into a film)
with Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain
as protagonists. And in which replanting everything is very easy if you empathize too much with what is shown in it.
The
love, trust, sexual satisfaction, infidelity or shared interests
are issues that
Hagai Levi
shows from the
beginning as if they were letters from a game in the series that can be seen on HBO Spain from September 13.

Mira (Jessica Chastain) and Jonathan (Oscar Isaac) in a conversation about their relationship.
A THERAPY IN CLOSE-UP
With the baggage granted by having directed
In Therapy
, a series that reflected different sessions of psychological therapy, Hagai Levi has agreed to sign the
remake
of a classic that has never gone out of fashion. Although the
five-part
series
begins with them sitting down talking about their relationship with a journalist,
the action takes off after a dinner with friends
that turns into a real pressure cooker.
From there, Mira (Chastain) and Jonathan (Isaac) are shown in scenes of their daily lives as
two people who loved each other a lot at one point
and who have now left all that far behind to settle in a land closer to separation as a solution to their vital anguish.
And in which other (third) people have a lot to say.
Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson in Ingmar Bergman's 1970s production.
If in the production of the 70s
Liv Ullmann and Erlend Josephson played
Marianne and Johann, a lawyer and a professor of psychology, in
Secrets of a marriage
Chastain and Isaac play a couple in which he, professor of Philosophy, is he has taken care of his two daughters and she is, consequently,
more liberated to pursue her professional career
in a company dedicated to new technologies.
OFF TOPICS
With these changes, Levi
delves into the reality in which many couples move today
and breaks with many clichés of masculinity, showing a man with many doubts when he knows a news that she communicates to him in the middle of the first episodes.
And, above all, another (a 'bomb' impossible to defuse) that is discovered in the second chapter.
Without revealing anything about the plot, it should be said that the staging -very theatrical and focused on the dialogues- delves into the
sense of anguish that Jonathan has
in many moments.
Just as the commitment to let us listen to the cicadas in the middle of the night while we watch a couple talk in bed or watch a camera in hand follow their steps through different rooms of the home is praiseworthy.
The HBO Spain series stands out for having numerous dialogues.
As a curiosity, each episode begins by
mixing reality and fiction
with a short sequence that reflects the filming of
Secrets of a marriage itself
.
A prologue that advances an avalanche of feelings expressed alternately by the protagonists of the story.
