• OCU Repairs signals the obsolescence of the iPhone due to its new updates

The

German government

wants

updates and replacement parts

for tablets and mobile phones to be available for

seven years,

thereby extending the European Commission's five-year proposal.

Mobile devices such as 'smartphones' or tablets are supported for two or three years of both 'software' and security updates.

The European Commission is currently considering extending upgrades and refills to five years (six for tablet parts).

However, the German government goes further, and in an attempt to

extend the life of mobile phones

with the aim of

reducing electronic waste

, it has proposed that both upgrades and replacement parts be available for seven years.

The proposal, collected by the German media Heise, does not include complete software updates, but security updates. In addition, companies would be urged to

make public the prices of spare parts and not to raise them

. Likewise, it would seek to

reduce the times in the delivery

of spare parts to avoid that the user is forced to acquire a new device.

For DigitalEurope, which brings together technology companies such as Samsung, Apple, OnePlus or Google, these proposals would go too far, and according to the aforementioned media, they would mark the time limit in three years for security patches and two for functional updates.

Nor do they share the proposals on spare parts, since they understand that

it would only be necessary to repair elements such as the screen or the battery.
