The Toyota Yaris has been a fixture in the small car market since 1998.
Now, for the first time, the model is being given a more opulent variant with the nickname Cross.
The prices for the Cross, which is available in six equipment levels and only with hybrid drive, start at 22,690 euros.
With an external length of 4.18 meters, it towers over the normal Yaris by 24 centimeters.
However, the wheelbase remains the same at 2.56 meters, and the height again increased by ten centimeters.
In mathematical terms, 390 liters of luggage fit in the trunk, which is 100 liters more than the sister model.
The Cross can be ordered with all-wheel drive for an extra charge of 2670 euros.
This should be an advantage over competitors such as Ford Puma, Opel Mokka or VW T-Cross, all of which are only available with front-wheel drive.
The platform and the drive otherwise correspond to the normal Yaris, both are produced in Valenciennes, France.
With its increased ground clearance and planking - the Adventure version also has underride protection and roof rails - the Cross exudes a pinch of off-road adventure.
Its angular design is visually reminiscent of its big brother, the Toyota RAV4.
Propulsion is provided by a 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine in a team with an electric motor, which results in a total system output of 116 hp. The three-cylinder engine alone generates 92 hp and offers a maximum torque of 120 Newton meters. The electric motor has a stately 80 PS and 141 Nm on its own. Power is transmitted by a continuously variable CVT transmission. A second electric motor is used on the rear axle of the 4 × 4 Yaris. On a first test drive with the front-wheel drive Cross-Yaris, there were no major abnormalities. The consumption of 4.6 liters of Super per 100 kilometers was close to the normal value. The market premiere for the Yaris Cross is on September 18th.
