Boston Dynamics posted a video on Tuesday showing the feats of which its humanoid robot Atlas is now capable in terms of agility.

The images posted on YouTube and on the company's blog show in particular two Atlases performing back flips.

The perfectly synchronized figure illustrates "how we push Atlas to its limits to discover a new generation of mobility, perception and athletic intelligence," said the American company in support of the demonstration.

Alternately or together, the two robots demonstrate balance and coordination of their movements.

Parkour is the perfect sandbox for the Atlas team to experiment with new behaviors.

A one-minute video, a preparation of several months

They jump, climb and descend uneven steps, run or even move on a beam before the highlight of the show, when they perform two consecutive aerial pirouettes performed at the same time.

To increase the robot's capabilities, engineers at Boston Dynamics "developed new movements inspired by human behavior," the company said.

It took them months to prepare for the parkour streak which lasts barely a minute.

“In the end, pushing the limits of a humanoid robot like Atlas gives rise to innovations in hardware and programming that can then be used on all of our robots at Boston Dynamics,” explained Scott Kuindersma, Atlas Project Manager.

The specialist considered "difficult to imagine within 20 years a world without sophisticated mobile robots moving with grace and reliability and working alongside humans to enrich our lives."

“However, we are only in the early stages of developing this future.

I hope a demonstration like this is a little glimpse of what is possible, ”he added.
