<Reporter> An

excavator is stopped next to a long dug in the soil, and an on-site investigation continues.

At the construction site of a new Hyundai E&C apartment building in Goyang, Gyeonggi-do, 63-year-old Kim, a daily worker belonging to a partner company, died.

At around 8:40 a.m., a bucket serving as an excavator's shovel came and hit Mr. Kim, who was in a pit 2 meters deep during the rainwater pipe burial work.

[Goyang Fire Station official: There is an excavator at the site, and the worker who worked there in front of the excavator is dead... .] At the

moment of the accident, it is known that there were no safety managers and signalers at the scene.

Hyundai E&C claims that the accident occurred when other workers were not present at the site because it was a break.

[Hyundai E&C official: (Sho Soo) I placed it, but as I said earlier, it was a break time, so in the process of organizing and leaving people… .] The

police and the Ministry of Employment and Labor are investigating the circumstances of the accident, including whether or not safety rules were observed, against on-site officials and excavator drivers.

We are inquiring about why the excavator was operating during the break time and why only Mr. Kim was present at the scene of the accident.

A whopping 52 workers have died in the last 10 years at Hyundai E&C's construction site, and this is already the fourth fatal accident this year alone.

In June, the Ministry of Employment and Labor's special supervision revealed more than 300 violations of the law.
