The first 3D printed school was established in Malawi, thanks to the Danish company Cobod which supplied the printers needed for the 14Trees subsidiary project, which aims to accelerate the production and commercialization of affordable housing technologies at scale. global.

“I am very proud of how our colleagues at 14Trees have deployed advanced 3D printing technology to meet such a critical infrastructure need.

Now that we have proven the concept's relevance in Malawi, we look forward to expanding this technology to the whole region, with projects already in the works in Kenya and Zimbabwe, ”said Miljan Gutovic, Europe region manager. , from the Middle East and Africa of the LafargeHolcim group, involved in the project.

Malawi severely lacks schools

According to Uniced, Malawi suffers from a glaring lack of schools. 3D printing technology could quickly build the 36,000 classrooms needed. With the usual construction methods, setting up all these schools would take 70 years against only 10 years with 3D printing.

This increasingly widespread technology made it possible to build the world's first 3D printed school in just 18 hours. “I am very impressed with the new building - its durability and design provide the space and facilities that students did not have before. This school will attract more students, and those who left will resume their studies, ”said Juliana Kuphanga Chikandila, primary education counselor and representative of the director of education, youth and sports in Malawi.

14trees wants to promote new construction methods that respect the environment, low carbon emissions.

By using 3D printing to set up this school in Malawi, the company reduced its ecological footprint by more than 50% compared to traditional construction methods.

More 3D printed schools are expected to open in Africa in the near future.
