Nigeria will indefinitely suspend the use of Twitter in the country.

The government made the decision on Friday after a tweet from Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari was deleted.

Buhari posted an offensive tweet about groups seeking independence in the Biafra region.

The president blamed them for the escalating violence against security forces.

This tweet was removed by Twitter as it would be against the platform's rules.

The Nigerian government also announced the suspension on Twitter.

It is not yet known exactly what the measure will look like.

For the time being, the social medium still works in the country.

"Just wait and see," said a government spokesman.

The Nigerian government says the use of Twitter is being stopped because too many "subversive activities" are said to be taking place.

Twitter says it will investigate the "deeply disturbing suspension".

"We will provide updates when more is known about the situation."
