In Korea, cases of so-called'breakthrough infection' that are confirmed after receiving the corona 19 vaccine twice are coming out one by one.

According to the Central Defense Countermeasure Headquarters (Bang Dae-bon) today (25th), as of 0 o'clock on the 21st, a total of 4 cases of infection in Korea were confirmed.

This is equivalent to about 0.0003% of the 1,482,842 people who have completed vaccination.

In case of infection even after vaccination is completed according to the recommended criteria such as the number of vaccinations and intervals, the Bang script classifies cases as breakthrough infection cases.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines breakthrough infection when the COVID-19 virus genome or antigen is detected 14 days after receiving the vaccine according to the recommended number of vaccinations.

As a result of the epidemiological investigation, it is estimated that two out of four were exposed to the virus 14 days after the second vaccination, so the probability of the vaccine effect will be limited, explained Bang Dae-bon.

The other two appeared to have been infected after 14 days, and no clinical symptoms were found.

Earlier, Bang Dae-bon said that a nurse in her 20s living in the Yeongnam area was confirmed as the first case of breakthrough infection in Korea.

This patient received the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine on March 18, and completed the second dose on April 8, the interval of 3 weeks, but was tested positive on the 18th of this month.

It is estimated that about 40 days after the second vaccination, transmission of the infection occurred through a family gathering on Mother's Day (May 8).

Lee Sang-won, director of epidemiological investigation and analysis, said, "The first breakthrough infection case (nurse) in their 20s (nurse) is judged as a non-mutagenic virus that does not correspond to the'virus of concern' or the'virus of interest'." I said.

Daebon Bang is currently analyzing the exact path of infection and the characteristics of the virus.

"There is a possibility of infection even after completing the recommended vaccination of any vaccine," said Bang Dae-bon. "In the case of breakthrough infection, even if confirmed, it is likely to be relatively mild or asymptomatic."

He also asked for active participation in the vaccination, saying, "According to the analysis so far, the COVID-19 vaccine has been confirmed to have a prophylactic effect of up to 90%, and if vaccination is performed, the progression to severe disease and secondary infection are greatly reduced even if it is infected."
