• Lupine Fugitive and rich: the life on the run of Spain's biggest cyber scammer

  • Justice Spain's biggest online criminal, sentenced to two years for a scam in León

The Supreme Court has sentenced a woman who owns a telephone booth in the Madrid neighborhood of Vallecas to six months in jail and a 3,600 euro fine for a crime against intellectual property by having two computers with Windows and Office hacked.

This is the first time that the Supreme Court has issued a conviction in a piracy case against intellectual property.

The condemned woman was registered by the National Police in November 2017. The authorities discovered that two of the eight computers used in the phone booth were running fraudulent versions of Windows and Office, according to Cadena Ser.

The justice alludes to the 2015 reform of the Penal Code, which includes the economic exploitation of products without licenses, something that according to the magistrates of the court was taking place in the telephone booth in question.

The woman, in addition to six months in jail, has been sentenced to compensate Microsoft with the cost of the two licenses, the company that owns both the Windows operating system and the Office suite (which includes Word, Excel and other programs );

and pay in turn a fine of 3,600 euros.

The sentence imposed by a Madrid court was appealed to the Provincial Court, which confirmed the sentence.

It was after the appeal of this decision when the Supreme Court has taken action on the matter and decided the sentence in full.

Piracy cases that usually end up before a judge in Spain tend to be much more massive.

The cases of websites blocked for their fraudulent broadcasts of football matches and other sporting events are particularly well known.

In the case of crimes related to technology, Spain has had cases as picturesque as that of Lupín, the largest cyber scammer in the history of Spain and responsible for scams worth more than 30,000 euros each month.
