The rules for storage offered by Google will change from June 1st.

You have to prepare for it.

The American company has decided to review its way of calculating the 15 GB it offers to people with a Google account, recalls

Numerama

.

For now, Google offers free storage of "high quality" photos.

Snapshots that do not exceed 16 megapixels are not counted.

Space is therefore offered.

Beyond that, the photos and videos in original quality saved in Google Photos eat up the 15 GB that is offered with each account.

As of June 1, all stored photos will be counted.

Photos, documents

The same goes for the other documents.

Google currently offers storage for files from Google Docs, Sheets and Slides, Drawings, Forms and Jamboard.

But from June 1, they will no longer be invisible and will be deducted from 15 GB, as attachments and messages from Gmail already are.

The change in these rules announced on November 11 will not come into effect until June 1.

This means that not all files that are already on Google's cloud are affected.

"Only files created or modified after June 1, 2021 are counted against your quota", specifies Google in its support note.

But be careful, a file created before June 1 that will be modified after this date will be deducted from the free 15 GB.

Nothing changes for owners of a Pixel

Once you exceed the quota, the only solution to continue storing files on your cloud will be to subscribe to a subscription to increase storage capacity via Google One.

100 GB for € 1.99 per month, 200 GB for € 2.99 per month, and 2 TB for € 9.99 per month.

Note that owners of a Pixel 5 or older Pixel will still be able to benefit from "free and unlimited storage space for saved photos and videos," Google explains.

To avoid paying, this may be the time to sort out the files to keep and those that may disappear or be stored locally.

Another solution is to change cloud service.
