The e-commerce giant Amazon continued its efforts in 2020 to combat the sale of counterfeit products on its platform.

A fight that resulted in the destruction of more than two million counterfeits, as well as the removal of more than 10 billion suspicious ads from its site.

As the world's leading online sales platform, Amazon is unfortunately a prime target for unscrupulous merchants.

Counterfeits on the rise

In its new report on its fight against counterfeiting in 2020, Amazon points out that there have been "increased attempts by bad actors to commit fraud and to offer counterfeit products". An increase which can be explained by the particular context of the past year. Due to the health crisis and the various lockdowns, online sales have exploded and especially on Amazon. A godsend for “correct” merchants, but also for unscrupulous vendors.

In 2020, Amazon seized millions of counterfeit products sold on its platform.

These were then sent to execution centers for destruction.

“Amazon destroyed these products to prevent them from being resold elsewhere in the supply chain,” says the e-commerce site.

To detect these counterfeit products, Amazon notably reviews the comments of customers who complain of having received counterfeit products, of poor quality or of having been fooled by the misleading photos in the ad.

The online sales platform also indicates to act upstream.

This is how more than 10 billion suspicious ads were blocked before being published.

Likewise, Amazon has prevented the creation of more than six million accounts of sellers suspected of being linked in counterfeit cases.

Means to fight against counterfeits

In 2020, Amazon invested more than $ 700 million to fight counterfeits on its platform. This is 200 million more than in 2019. “Amazon continues to innovate on its robust proactive controls and powerful tools for brands, and will not rest until there are zero counterfeits in its store. “, Says the e-commerce giant. "However, this is an escalating battle, with criminals continuing to look for ways to sell counterfeits, and the only way to stop these counterfeiters for good is to hold them accountable through the system. judicial and criminal prosecution. "

But counterfeit products are not the only thorn in Amazon's side, the deceptively rave reviews left under certain products are also a real pain for the platform.

Some sellers do not hesitate to pay their customers to give them a good rating or a complimentary comment once they have received their order.

Unfortunately, identifying them is a real challenge for Amazon, which still indicates that it is working to fight against this kind of practice that violates its evaluation policies.
