<Anchor> An

employee who worked at a large church in Seongnam, Gyeonggi-do, has taken hundreds of millions of won in donations over 10 years.

However, even when the church was aware of this, only part of the money embezzled by the employee was returned and the case was covered.

Somehow, reporter Choi Sun-gil covered it.

<Reporter> It

is a global church in Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, with 40,000 registered members.

Mr. A, who was a member of the finance department, withdrew donations for over 10 years from 2003 to 2014.

The amount confirmed by the church was about 400 million won.

This fact was only known to the congregation after five years.

This is because the pastor and other church officials covered the case after investigating themselves.

Of the embezzlement amount, only 350 million won was returned and Mr. A was dismissed.

[Church member: It was so absurd.

I couldn't imagine stealing at the church as big as that...

.] In

addition, the church made it look as if it came in as a tithing or offering with 350 million won returned to conceal the fact of embezzlement.

It is a clear case of embezzlement, and it is pointed out that it did not go through procedures such as audit according to the internal regulations of the church.

They accounted for 260 million won as a'designated relief donation', which can be used arbitrarily, but it is suspected that the funds are misappropriated.

[Church members: Despite the need to transfer (return money) to the general account, there was intention to use the designated relief donation arbitrarily.] The

church said that it did not disclose the case due to concerns about the decline in external trust.

[The pastor in charge of the church: When this is revealed, it may hurt the hearts of them (some believers), and it may cause inconvenience.] The

church explained that the use of redemption money was normal, but believers revealed the truth Asking for it, I filed a complaint with the police against Mr. A and then the financial officer.
