Apple would significantly reduce the production of AirPods this year.

Due to increasing competition, a lot less of the wireless earbuds are sold than expected, the Japanese business newspaper

Nikkei Asia

reports

based on insiders.

Apple would now expect sales of between 75 million and 85 million pairs of AirPods in 2021. That is a lot less than an earlier forecast of 110 million.

The US tech company hopes the introduction of new AirPods will boost sales later this year.

According to

Nikkei Asia

, Apple sold nearly 73 million units of the wireless earbuds last year. The company thus had a market share of 31 percent. Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi often produce cheaper alternatives.
