World Climate Summit will be held on the 22nd of this year, the 51st Earth Day, led by the United States. US President Biden has already demanded further reductions in greenhouse gases in many countries since the beginning of this year, especially when it comes to environmental issues. It is known that Korea will participate in reducing GHG emissions and reducing coal use globally at this meeting.

Reporter Jang Se-man will provide more details.

is a coal-fired power plant built by KEPCO's Central Power and the local government on the island of Java, Indonesia.

Out of the total project cost of KRW 1 trillion, about 260 billion KRW was loaned by the Export-Import Bank, a state-owned bank.

[Chirebon Unit 1) Operating for 30 years, the dividend income is expected to reach 410 billion won.] The

loans from national financial institutions supported for the construction and operation of overseas coal-fired power plants

amounted to KRW

15 trillion to China and Japan. It is the third most frequent.

The problem is that there is constant controversy about environmental pollution and opposition from residents in each area of the coal power plant.

Developed countries have faced international accusations of dismissing technologies and facilities that have already been neglected to underdeveloped countries.

Global investment institutions, which are shareholders of KEPCO, are pressing KEPCO to suspend its business, and as the cost of renewable energy generation such as solar power has rapidly decreased, the deterioration of the profitability of coal power generation has also become an obstacle.

[Kim Joo-jin/Climate Solution Attorney: As solar and wind power technology becomes cheaper, the construction market for new coal power plants has declined by 80-90% over the past 6-7 years.]

President Moon Jae-in said at the Climate Summit, which will be held shortly afterward

.

The plan to stop supporting overseas coal power generation seems to be due to the perception that coal has reached its limit.

There are several steps to assessing the progress of carbon neutrality.

These are the declaration of carbon neutrality, the declaration of non-overseas coal, and the declaration of non-internal combustion locomotives. If we declare the suspension of overseas coal this time, it can be said that it has risen one step.

The problem is not only overseas coal, but also domestic coal power generation.

Even if the retirement of the old power plant is accelerated, seven new sites are still being built on the plate.

If these places operate for 30 years to recover investment costs, it is said that de-coal in Korea is only possible in the mid-2050s, so the domestic coal controversy seems to begin from now on.
