From Madrid to heaven ... passing through Kilkenny, in Ireland, and with a stop in Hollywood.

This is how the current itinerary of

María Pareja

(Madrid, 1993)

could be defined, for the moment,

a Spanish entertainer who can experience her big night on April 25.

On that day the Oscars ceremony is celebrated and the film for which he has worked in recent years,

Wolfwalkers

(available on Apple TV +), is up for the Oscar for Best Animated Film

.

"That night I will live it with the team of this Irish production via Zoom. With what

I would like to be with them physically ... Or in Hollywood

, that does make me angry!", Explains Pareja with a laugh.

'Wolfwalkers' is up for the Oscar for Best Animated Film.

ROAD TO IRELAND

A little less than three years ago, María Pareja plucked up her courage and went to

Kilkenny

(Ireland) to

work at Cartoon Saloon

.

This animation studio is responsible for three films that received Oscar nominations:

The Secret of the Book of Kells

(2009),

The Song of the Sea

(2014) and, now, the aforementioned

Wolfwalkers

.

"I was studying in Spain and I saw that, to work in animation, I had to leave.

In our country the animation industry is not very big

, so there is not much work and there is a lot of competition," says the Madrilenian.

"In addition, it

is a good experience to know other ways of working.

I would recommend to those who are starting in this that they embark on an adventure. You have to put in many hours of work, have a little luck and give up some things. Me, for example I had a band, friends, a boyfriend ... But it's

worth it. "

ART DIRECTION

At

Wolfwalkers

, María Pareja has worked as an art co-director.

"I knew the Cartoon Saloon studio since I saw

The Song of the Sea

. Now that I have worked with them and I continue to do so in another production that I cannot speak about at the moment

I feel very lucky

. I did not know what project they would put me in after having I sent my portfolio, but I was very happy when they told me it would be

Wolfwalkers

", says the creator.

"It seems to me that it tells a necessary story, with two strong female characters that do not conform to the established and that speaks of a topic as current as taking care of our planet. My work at

Wolfwalkers

has been to

design and make style guides to help to supervisors and artists. And to give my opinion

to the directors to make sure that the style was homogeneous and everything was coherent. "

Robyn and Mabh, the two protagonists of the film, turned into wolves.

The film, made with

traditional animation techniques

and directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart, tells the

story of friendship between two girls in the 17th century

.

One is Robyn, daughter of a wolf hunter, and the other is Mebh, a mysterious girl with the ability to transform into a wolf.

The two will live all kinds of adventures trying to help their parents while avoiding being hunted (or arrested) by the evil Lord Protector, the villain of the film.

CLASSIC DISNEY LOVER

Pareja admits not having enjoyed too much with the

rival

Wolfwalkers

films

at the Oscars

(

Onward

,

Soul

,

Beyond the Moon

and

Shaun the sheep. The movie: Farmageddon

) and much with hers, although she admits to being an

admirer of them. Disney classics

and two nominated films are from this factory.

Robyn, before she became a wolf.

For this Madrilenian, animation is something that has driven her crazy since she was little.

"I've always painted. Whether it was on the subway

, making people stop to look,

or at home

.

"

Napkins, papers and even the wall of her room were the spaces that María Pareja painted and painted without stopping.

"One day my mother told me that, when I was 18, I could paint a mural in my room," she laughs.

"I never imagined it would end in this, that's why I started

studying Telecommunications Engineering

at the Rey Juan Carlos University. Then I changed and

got into U-Tad

, a technology and digital art center. There I had many colleagues who came out of Spain at the time ".
