Cultural walk
Church of Santo Tomás Apóstol. Tourism of El Berrueco.
El Berrueco was founded in the 11th century as a dependent village of the neighboring Uceda, currently in the province of Guadalajara, but in the Madrid municipality there are still vestiges of Roman times today, such as the
Bridge
that crosses the Arroyo Jóbalo, and the Muslim, such as the
Watchtower
, a 10th century watchtower, both located on the outskirts of town.
The epicenter of the urban area, and its most emblematic place, is the
Plaza de la Picota
, presided over by the City Hall building.
In the center is
the Picota
, the most outstanding architectural element of the municipality, where criminals were traditionally tied up so that they would be subjected to popular ridicule.
Its origin dates back to the year 1000 and it is the only one that is preserved of all those that were in the different towns of the Community of Madrid.
Strolling around you will reach the
Church of Santo Tomas Apóstol
, whose construction began in the 13th century, on a small Mudejar temple or hermitage.
From its viewpoint, where three granite crosses are located, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the mountains.
The temple is surrounded by traditional dwellings, with large granite lintels and orchards delimited by stone fences.
Another historical vestige in the town is the
Herrar Potro
, one of the oldest in the area, formerly used for shoeing cattle and made with large monolithic granite stones and complementary elements of iron and wood.
Walk in nature
Roman Bridge. Tourism of El Berrueco.
The surroundings of El Berrueco are a paradise for lovers of hiking, mountain biking and motorcycles, and even water sports.
From the urban area there are several paths of different difficulty, including those that reach the aforementioned
Roman Bridge
and the Watchtower.
The first is 2.6 km away.
Built on the Arroyo Jóbalo as a place of obligatory passage for all carriages that went from Somosierra to Madrid (and vice versa) until the 18th century, at present it serves to delimit the municipalities of El Berrueco and Sieteiglesias.
During the tour there are benches and information panels.
The
path of the Watchtower
, of 3.8 km and steep slopes, in the opposite direction to the Bridge, reaches this cylindrical lookout tower of Arab origin (10th century), formerly used as a defense.
It is one of the most visited places in the Sierra Norte de Madrid, thanks to the views of the mountains and the reservoir.
La Atalaya.Tourism of El Berrueco.
The excursion to El Berrueco cannot end without approaching its greatest claim: the
Atazar Reservoir
.
Built in 1972, it is the largest in the Community of Madrid.
There are many who will spend the day there to walk, ride a canoe, sail or sunbathe on its sandy beaches (bathing is officially prohibited).
The reservoir is
decorated
with large formations of stones, some in impossible balance, that appear between the rockrose and broom on the road.
From the town there is a route of about 3.7 kilometers that, bordering the lake, reaches the
Mirador del Embalse
, passing through fishing areas.
The effort is worth it to enjoy this quiet point with incredible views.
