The

route of the White Villages of Cádiz

is a classic among tourists who visit the province, as well as one of the most beautiful in Spain.

Therefore, it is not surprising that the itinerary has been imposed as the preferred one in Andalusia in a macro-survey carried out by the renowned travel guide Lonely Planet to its community of Spanish travelers through its Instagram network @lonelyplanet_es.

The vote, in which

16 perfect Andalusian routes

were proposed,

all of them to travel on their own and by car

, asked users of the social network to choose their favorite.

Subjected to a competition based on eliminations (round of 16, quarter-finals, semifinals ...), 53% of the more than 35,000 participants chose, in a very tight final, the White Villages, compared to 47% who preferred

Granada and Sierra Subbética.

In third and fourth position, the travelers chose the route of

the Alpujarra and Sierra Nevada

and the

Costa de Almería

, respectively.

The survey was completed by other spectacular tours of the Andalusian Community, both inland and along the coast: Jaén and the Sierra Mágina, Sierra Morena, the Bay of Cádiz, the Costa del Sol, the Costa de la Luz, the Sierra de Aracena, the Sevillian countryside, the Costa Tropical, the Sierras de Cazorla and Segura, the route from the Vélez to Guadix, Córdoba and its countryside and the tour of the jewels of the Renaissance in Jaen.

The Alhambra of Granada.

The

Route of the White Villages of Cádiz

is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful in Andalusia and with the greatest appeal for tourists.

It enters the interior of the province and runs through a set of municipalities nestled in the Sierra de Grazalema that, as their name suggests, stand out for the white color of the facades of their houses, painted in lime since the 19th century to protect themselves from the heat. .

The white contrasts with the natural environment in which these towns are located, forming a postcard landscape.

The itinerary, perfect for a weekend getaway by car,

is made up of 19 villages considered to be the most beautiful in the region

, which stand out for hosting millenary castles perched on hills, historic medieval town centers, labyrinthine narrow and cobbled streets, Centennial churches, monasteries, palaces ... and for being surrounded by natural spaces full of well-marked trails for all tastes.

Grazalema, Cádiz.

The ideal would be to visit the 19 towns, but if you do not have much time there are some that are essential.

On a steep cliff and on the banks of the Guadalete River is

Arcos de la Frontera

, crowned by the Moorish castle of the Dukes of Arcos (from the 11th century) and the Church of San Pedro.

The Plaza del Cabildo, numerous Gothic-Baroque churches and a spectacular viewpoint are other stops when walking through this town.

Other essentials are

Grazalema

, nestled on the green slopes of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park,

Zahara de la Sierra

, at an altitude of 1,357 m in Puerto de las Palomas and overlooking a turquoise reservoir, and

Olvera

, surrounded by rows of olive groves and protected by a 12th century castle.

An obligatory stop on the route is

Setenil de las Bodegas

, a spectacular white town that stands out for its cave-houses dug into the rocks of the hill where it is located, in the canyon of the Trejo River over the waters of the Guadalporcún River.

Its urban fabric is declared a Historic Site.

Olvera, Cádiz.

Vejer de la Frontera is

also worth a visit.

It is the closest to the coast and the impressive beaches of Cádiz (only 12 km from Barbate).

Located on a rocky cliff, among the most emblematic enclaves of the walled town are an 11th century Moorish castle, the Church of the Divine Savior, a mixture of Mudejar from the s.

XIV and Gothic of the s.

XVI, and the Casa del Mayorazgo, from the s.

XVIII, with its beautiful patios full of flowers.

All these routes are detailed in the new Lonely Planet guide

En route through Andalusia

, which includes 24 road trips to fully discover Andalusia.
