Twitter reportedly considered acquiring Clubhouse for $ 4 billion (around 3.36 billion euros).

Discussions between officials of the social network and those of the application of audio exchanges began "in recent months" before coming to an abrupt end, reports

Bloomberg

.

The reasons why the negotiations failed were not disclosed.

"We are not commenting on rumors or speculation," Twitter told

Business Insider

on the matter.

Clubhouse is on the rise and has prestigious users such as Paris Hilton and Oprah Winfrey.

The invitation-only platform had been downloaded 11.4 million times as of March 1, 2021. A month earlier, the figure stood at just 3.5 million.

An impressive success

The enthusiasm of financiers is also at the rendezvous.

On January 24, Clubhouse raised funds for a total of $ 110 million, or just over 92 million euros.

Its total value was then estimated at nearly $ 1.4 billion (around 1.2 billion euros).

The company is said to be in talks for additional fundraising that could boost its value to $ 4 billion.

This is precisely the amount that the sale of the platform to Twitter would have made if it had taken place.

The success of Clubhouse is all the more impressive given that the app only available on iOS was only created barely a year ago.

The digital giants were quick to notice the popularity of the platform.

Many of them also wanted to develop their own functionality allowing the broadcasting of audio content.

Twitter, for example, launched the beta version of Spaces at the end of 2020. Facebook, Microsoft, LinkedIn and Slack are also working on similar tools.
