Michael van Gerwen realizes that he got away well on Tuesday evening in his Premier League match with Peter Wright.
The Brabant player did not reach his usual level, but his opponent did a lot worse in Milton Keynes (7-2).
"I can now say a big mouth, but with an average of 92 you are not allowed to say anything. I now have to go back to the practice board and try to do better afterwards," said Van Gerwen at his press conference.
"That does not detract from the fact that it is nice to win this way, especially if it happens against Peter."
51-year-old Wright played under average with an average of 88.41 and lost his own leg three times.
Van Gerwen did not offer much in return, but it was enough to beat his rival and to credit his first victory in this edition of the Premier League.
"It is an understatement to say that I didn't play my best," said a self-critical Van Gerwen, who opened the Premier League on Monday evening with a draw against Dimitri Van den Bergh (6-6).
"I played crappy and the same goes for Peter. When that happens, you have to take advantage of it and make sure you don't make the same mistakes. It's not always easy."

'Peter sometimes says things he shouldn't say'
The win tasted extra sweet for Van Gerwen because of the comments Wright made in the run-up to the Premier League.
Snakebite said the former world number one would not win a television tournament this year.
"We all know Peter. Sometimes he says things that he should not say. I think that he can better focus on himself, that will also benefit his game," said Van Gerwen, who joined the Players in November 2020. Championship Finals last won a television tournament.
"My recent results may have been a wake-up call for me too. From: hey Mike, you have to do a little better. Sometimes I put too much pressure on myself, but I just have to keep believing in myself and keep working hard. Then it really pays off. "
Van Gerwen is at the top of the Premier League rankings due to his victory over Wright.
The five-time winner of the prestigious PDC tournament will take on Rob Cross on Wednesday evening.
