Owners of Android smartphones are once again the target of two dangerous malware;

AlienBot Banker and MRAT.

Cybersecurity researchers at Check Point have indeed discovered the presence of these two dangerous viruses in 9 Android applications.

The first malware, AlienBot Banker, targets the banking information that is on the smartphones of its victims and tries to find its way to their bank accounts.

The second, MRAT, takes the form of a Trojan horse that allows hackers to remotely access and take control of contaminated smartphones once deployed on devices.

The Check Point researchers explain in their report that the 9 infected applications managed to go under the radar of Google and the protection measures of the Play Store thanks to another malicious software which made the presence of the two viruses undetectable.

Thanks to this, the apps were able to stay on the Play Store for a long time and be downloaded by many users, potentially causing as many victims.

Some of these apps remain on the Play Store

Obviously, Google has been made aware of the problem and most of the apps have been removed from the app store.

However, some are still listed on the Play Store.

Here is the list of infected applications:

  • Cake VPN - com.lazycoder.cakevpns

  • Pacific VPN - com.protectvpn.freeapp

  • eVPN - com.abcd.evpnfree

  • BeatPlayer - com.crrl.beatplayers

  • QR / Barcode Scanner MAX - com.bezrukd.qrcodebarcode

  • eVPN - Package name: com.abcd.evpnfree

  • MusicPlayer - com.revosleap.samplemusicplayers

  • tooltipnatorlibrary - com.mistergrizzlys.docscanpro

  • QRecorder - com.record.callvoicerecorder

If you have installed one or more of these apps, it is obviously advisable to uninstall them.

Also remember to run an antivirus scan, to be sure that no malware is hiding on your smartphone.

However, it is quite difficult to know the number of victims of these two viruses since the Check Point report does not specify the countries that have been targeted.
