5G across Europe for 2030 -

The European Commission has just unveiled its vision, its objectives and the ways forward to ensure a successful digital transformation of Europe by 2030. A vision and ambitious objectives which are part of the “digital decade” " from Europe.

A project that includes several digital principles and objectives, including the deployment of 5G in all populated areas of Europe within the next decade.

Several European countries have already started rolling out 5G in several of their cities, but mobile ultra-broadband is still far from optimal today.

In reality, “5G European cities” are only partially covered by this network and it often relies on old infrastructure that does not allow full use of this technology.

But that could change over the next few years.

Europe wants 5G to be deployed everywhere in the usual areas by 2030. An obviously ambitious project, but it is not the only one.

A "digital compass" of Europe

In addition to 5G, the European Commission also plans to develop more secure, efficient and sustainable digital infrastructures within the EU by 2030. All households should thus be able to have gigabit connectivity.

There is also talk of the EU producing cutting-edge sustainable semiconductors and becoming a major player in the sector.

This will allow European companies to be less dependent on foreign semiconductor manufacturers as is currently the case.

Europe also wants to have its first quantum computer.

Europe's 'digital decade' project also involves training citizens in basic digital skills and employing more ICT specialists, including more women.

The digital transformation of companies is also planned.

Three in four companies are expected to use cloud, big data and artificial intelligence IT services.

Finally, the last axis of the “digital compass” for Europe is the digitization of public services.

Facing global challenges

As the Commission underlines in its press release, the digital transformation of the EU presents global challenges.

Its digital strategy is positive and is “focused on the human aspect within international organizations and through strong international digital partnerships.

"

“The pandemic has revealed how essential digital technologies and skills are for working, studying and communicating, and where we need to improve.

We must now realize this digital decade of Europe so that all citizens and all businesses can access the best that the digital world can offer ”, underlined Ursula von der Leyen, President of the Commission.

It should be noted, however, that the vision of the European Commission is not binding on the Member States.

They are therefore free to take the bandwagon.

Europe's 'digital compass' only serves to encourage the EU and Member States to have common digital ambitions.
