Michael van Gerwen impressed on Saturday in the fifth round of the UK Open in Milton Keynes.

The defending champion convincingly beat Mensur Suljovic (10-4).

Dirk van Duijvenbode lost in a spectacle with large figures to an unleashed Jonny Clayton (3-10).

Van Gerwen initially seemed to have a tough job with Suljovic.

He still took the opening leg, but then came to a 1-3 deficit.

However, he did not panic and took the following six legs to himself, making an unbridgeable gap (7-3).

In the future, the rider from Brabant only awarded Suljovic the eleventh leg and finished with a nice 167 finish.

He eventually came to a fine average of 103.8 points and thus recovered from Friday's changeable performance in the fourth round against Scott Mitchell (10-8).

Van Gerwen is on the hunt for his fourth title at the UK Open - he was the best in 2015, 2016 and last year - and his first this year.

He was immediately eliminated in the second round at The Masters and had to settle for one semi-final place in the first four Players Championships.

Van Duijvenbode plays a strong match

Van Duijvenbode averaged over 100 points for almost the entire game, but that was not enough to get Clayton into trouble.

He immediately fell 0-5 and that gap was too big to make it exciting.

The South Hollander did reduce the deficit to 3-6, but from that moment on, his level plummeted and Clayton took the following four legs.

He scored an average of 136 points in the last two legs and for the third time in the match and eventually came to 108.4 points.

Van Duijvenbode stunted on Friday in the fourth round after a thriller against Gary Anderson (10-9), but could not provide a new surprise against Clayton, who is in great shape.

The Welshman has already won The Masters and Players Championship 4 this year.

Tailor to sixth round

Besides Van Gerwen, Martijn Kleermaker is the only other Dutchman in the sixth round.

De Gelderlander recorded a handsome 10-6 win over Callan Rydz, the winner of Players Championship 2. Ron Meulenkamp lost 7-10 against Alan Soutar, Raymond van Barneveld's conqueror in the second round, and Danny Noppert with 8- 10 against Dave Chsinall.

Van Gerwen will take on Jose de Sousa on Saturday evening in the sixth round, who was too strong for Michael Smith in the fifth round with 10-9.

Tailor, who never reached the sixth round at the UK Open, then meets Luke Humphries, who settled with Ryan Searle 10-7.

Reigning world champion and world number one Gerwyn Price also qualified for the sixth round by a 10-3 win over Ricky Evans.

Big names like Rob Cross did not make it against James Wade (8-10) and the same was true for Daryl Gurney against Gabriel Clemens (7-10).

The UK Open, the 'FA Cup of darts', normally takes place in Minehead, but will be held behind closed doors in Milton Keynes this year due to the corona measures.

The quarter-finals, semi-finals and final will be played on Sunday.

From the fourth round, there is an open draw at the end of each round.
