World Day Without Facebook is Sunday February 28.

In France, the social network remains the most popular platform and one of the most visited sites on a daily basis.

But its user base has struggled to renew itself in the face of the emergence of Snapchat and then TikTok.

Result: Facebook is today the "oldest" social network.

Launched 10 years ago by Internet users, the World Day Without Facebook has been taking place since February 28.

A day during which we are supposed to resist the temptation to take a look at the most popular social network in the world (2.8 billion users) and think about our relationship to this kind of platforms.

In France, Facebook has around 38 million active members.

Not easy to do without it, if only for a day.

Finally, it depends for whom: according to a study by Médiamétrie, Facebook remains the most popular social network in France, far ahead of Whatsapp and Instagram, but it is marked by a generational divide.

According to this study, beyond 25 years, Facebook exercises an undivided domination over the 2.0 life of French people.

60% of 25-49 year olds and 38% of over 50s log in every day.

On the other hand, "only" 40% of 15-24 year olds spend time there.

"Only" because, in this age group, Facebook is only the fourth most consulted social network.

Young people are thus twice as numerous on Snapchat, the undisputed leader (82%).

The podium is completed by Instagram (69%) and a newcomer: TikTok (40%).

Facebook struggles with the TikTok phenomenon

The application of music videos, which took off in 2019, is the one that has benefited the most from confinements in 2020: its audience has quadrupled in one year.

Now, 11 million French people consult TikTok at least once a month.

The difference in popularity with Facebook lies in the consultation time.

15-24 year olds spend, on average, 24 minutes per day on TikTok, compared to 8 minutes on Facebook (for 2h12 on all networks).

Despite everything, of the entire population, Facebook remains the most consulted social network.

The French spend, on average, 12 minutes a day, one more than on Snapchat (out of a total of 45 minutes).

Another sign of the increasingly relative interest of the French for Facebook: its audience grew by only 3% in 2020, in France.

Only Twitter is doing less well with a drop in the number of monthly visitors of 2%.

A sluggish renewal that can be felt in the average age of users: 23 for TikTok, 29 for Snapchat, 32 for Instagram, 34 for Twitter and… 45 for Facebook.

It is the "oldest" social network.
