CHRISTIOPHE SEFRIN / 20 MINUTES

The accident detection system of a Google Pixel smartphone saved the life of an inhabitant of Missouri (United States) injured at his home in November 2020. Rescue came quickly to this owner of a Pixel 4L because they had been warned automatically by the smartphone, reports

The man told Reddit on Tuesday that the shock resulted in loss of consciousness.

A voice in my ear

The excavator he was using for work overturned and fell into a ditch, hitting it.

The American later learned that he had broken seven ribs and four thoracic vertebrae.

When he regained consciousness, he had felt severe pain, had found that he could not move and that his smartphone had been thrown away from him.

He then started screaming and had to his surprise heard the voice of a rescuer in his Bluetooth earpiece.

The latter had already sent an ambulance to the victim, which arrived a few minutes later.

His life was thus partly saved by his phone, which had called 911 and communicated his location.

An ingenious system

The victim had activated this system only two weeks earlier.

The device originally designed to give warning in the event of a car accident is available on all Pixels from Model 3. When the system is triggered, it emits an intense vibration and a loud ringing for 60 seconds, explains

If the owner of the phone says it's okay, it instantly shuts down.

If it calls for help, the system contacts the emergency services.

It reacts in the same way if no action is detected and also communicates the geographical coordinates of its location.
