"The militarization of the Moon and lunar exploration is unacceptable," he wrote on Twitter.

The Wall Street Journal newspaper, citing sources in the government and in the space industry, previously reported that the Pentagon may in the future provide protection for NASA bases on the moon, as well as operations of private companies to extract useful resources on the lunar surface.

The publication notes that the expansion of cooperation between the US Department of Defense and NASA is due to the need to counter challenges from Russia and China.

Earlier, Roskosmos stated that Russia would raise the issue of the US plans to extract minerals on the Moon at the UN General Assembly session.

As noted in the Russian Foreign Ministry, outer space, including the moon, is not subject to national appropriation.
