The

erotic online store 'Platanomelon'

has suffered theft of personal data of its customers, although there has been no theft of bank details.

According to experts consulted, cybercriminals may use this data to extort money from customers

As sources from the National Cybersecurity Institute of Spain (Incibe) have confirmed to Servimedia, full names, home addresses, telephone numbers or emails have been stolen.

The company, for its part, has already notified those affected of this theft, which comes from

two former employees of the online sales platform 'Shopify

', through whose system the purchases of dildos, vibrators, lingerie or accessories are made 'bondage' that this erotic shop sells.

"The company that manages our e-commerce platform notified us on December 30 that it had experienced an internal data breach that affected more than 200 companies around the world, including ours," explained 'Platanomelon' to his clients of erotic products.

Those responsible for this massive theft of personal data were two former employees of this e-commerce platform, Shopify, who gained unauthorized access to customer transaction records during the month of June 2020.

The stolen information affects the names and surnames of customers, emails, postal address, telephone and the products they bought, although the company

ensures that it has not affected financial data or passwords

.

From the National Institute of Cybersecurity of Spain they explained that the stolen data "is not serious", although experts consulted by Servimedia warned that criminals can use this information to extort or threaten customers, something quite common when a robbery occurs of this style.

"There is an economic interest in the direct sale of this data, which

is used for extortion or blackmail

to people. For example, customers can be threatened with revealing their purchases if they do not pay a certain amount of money," explained Servimedia the data protection specialist Samuel Parra.

At the moment, the 'sex-shop' already notified the theft of the data to the Spanish Agency for Data Protection (AEPD) on December 31 and says it does not foresee any damage to its customers, since "this security breach it is not related to an external attack that has compromised the technical protection systems of Shopify, but it has been due to an isolated event derived from the disloyalty of two employees ".

In the event that a customer is extorted or threatened to reveal their purchases of sex toys, Samuel Parra suggests "ignore the threats, never pay and go report it", since "if we make that payment we will enter a spiral of recurring payments "with different extortions.

However, since it is data theft at an international level, it is difficult to prosecute these cybercriminals, who

in Spain could face prison terms that could reach between three and four years in prison

.
