What is the best outdoor security camera?

And which one has the best price-quality ratio?

NU.nl and the Consumers' Association provide an answer.

A security camera must be able to detect movements properly.

In addition, it is important that the quality of the image and sound is good and that you receive a signal if something is wrong.

But security and privacy must also be in order.

You don't want everyone to be able to watch through your camera.

The Consumers' Association tests security cameras for image and sound quality, motion detection and notification, among other things.

A total of 37 cameras have been tested for indoor and outdoor use and are widely available.

Of the 27 tested outdoor cameras, an Arlo camera came out Best in the Test.

A D-Link camera is the Best Buy.

Best in Test: Arlo Pro 3 with two cams

  • Price: 395 euros

  • Test verdict: 7.7

  • Viewing angle according to manufacturer: 160 degrees

  • Maximum video resolution: 2,560 by 1,440 pixels

The Arlo Pro 3 doesn't come cheap.

The set with two cameras is the smallest set available.

But for that price you do get a nice system.

On top of the purchase price, there may also be a paid subscription.

Without a subscription, you miss options such as thirty days of cloud storage of recordings, screenshots for notifications and setting detection zones (the part of the image to which the camera must respond).

The cameras are wireless with rechargeable batteries.

The picture and sound quality is good.

As soon as the cameras detect movement, you will receive a notification on your smartphone.

The base station is indoors and has a siren.

You can save local videos via a USB connection on the base station.

A disadvantage is that the system does not warn you when the connection between the base station and the cameras is lost.

Best Buy: D-Link DCS-8600LH

  • Price: 178 euros

  • Test verdict: 7.1

  • Angle of view according to manufacturer: 135 degrees

  • Maximum video resolution: 1,920 by 1,080 pixels

  • Find the lowest price

The D-Link is a system with a good price-quality ratio.

It is a separate camera without a base station.

You can also opt for a paid subscription with this system.

Without a subscription, your recordings will be saved for one day;

with a subscription that is one week.

You can also save recordings locally via an SD card in the camera.

The image and sound quality of the camera is good.

But the motion detection is less sensitive at a longer distance.

Also, this camera cannot distinguish between moving people, animals or objects.

However, you can set fairly accurately to which part of the image the camera should respond.

The camera only works on mains power, so that can be a disadvantage if you don't have a power supply outside.

Accountability

In this column we write weekly about household and technological appliances that have been tested by the Consumers' Association.

This is a collaboration between the independent editors of NU.nl and the Consumers' Association.

The Consumers' Association tests thousands of products every year, together with qualified technicians in specialized laboratories at home and abroad.

The products being tested are store-bought so they are not pre-manipulated by manufacturers.

New models are tested as soon as possible after introduction.

How fast that is differs per product.

The Best in the Test is the product with the best test rating.

This can also be a somewhat older model, because a newer model is not always better.

The Best Buy is the product with the best price-quality ratio.
