The last night of the year - and, to a certain extent, the first minutes of 2021 - were the conclusion of everything that has been 2020: a year of screens.

Thus, 1,400 million calls and video calls were made on WhatsApp only on New Year's Eve, according to data published by Facebook.

"Despite the fact that many were away from their family and friends due to the Covid-19 pandemic, people were able to connect in the same way they have been doing all year: through videos and calls," the company summarizes in an entry from your blog.

These 1,400 million represent the record of calls in a single day on WhatsApp.

In fact, it represents an increase of 50% compared to the same day of the previous year, which is always one of the busiest for the messaging application.

Interestingly, the confinement made New Year's Eve of any year a normal day in 2020. "Before Covid-19, New Year's Eve generated one of the biggest Facebook peaks in messages, photo uploads and sharing updates at midnight in everyone, "explains Caitlin Banford, programmer for the social network.

"However, in March 2020 the early days of the pandemic produced traffic spikes that would make New Year's Eve seem tiny," he continues.

This trend "lasted for several months."

On Messenger, the social network's own messaging tool, celebrations were also a trend: the record for group video calls (that is, between at least three people) in the United States was broken.

In general, there were twice as many calls as on a typical day.

The last application of the Facebook trinity, Instagram, had its leading role with the direct ones, which totaled 55 million throughout the day of New Year's Eve (this number, yes, they got it between the direct ones of Instagram and those of Facebook).
