• Sony The ridiculous profit that PlayStation makes for every console it sells

  • Sony The secret of PlayStation that has remained hidden for more than 25 years

I will not be the one to perpetuate the war between consoles, both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are good options with literally next-gen performance.

There is a noticeable jump in both devices compared to their predecessors, but enjoying this improvement will depend on other factors.

Taking into account that the average Spanish salary is around 1,658 euros gross per month, 433 euros lower than the average European remuneration (according to data from the 'VII Adecco Annual Monitor on Salaries), it is clear that for our European neighbors enjoying these new consoles is a lower outlay.

In addition, taking the PlayStation 5 as an example, it is not only the cost of the console (499.99 euros with Blu-ray and 399.99 in its digital version), the games (ranging between 59.99 and 79, 99 euros) and some of its accessories such as helmets (99.99 euros) or charging station for the controls (29.99).

To appreciate a true graphical difference between the PlayStation 4 Pro and the next generation, the monitor or television that it is plugged into will have to be 4K.

An added (important) expense.

Before you give vent to negative comments, read on.

Both consoles have a lot going for them besides GPU performance.

The SSD has extinguished the loading screens (or is at it) and both are set to display resolutions up to 8K in the future.

However, here comes the but, if you do not have a monitor or a 4K TV, the generational jump is not going to be worth it.

4K performance is in essence what is making the difference between generations with more detailed images, more impressive environments and large without popping effect.

Sounds good, but say goodbye to all the showmanship if you have a relatively old screen.

And when we talk about an old concept in technology, it can be more than four or five years ago.

If you connect a PS5 to a Full HD screen, it is very likely that the games will not look much different than they did in the previous generation.

How many Spanish houses have 4K screens?

According to a study by Idealo, in 2018, 70% of the televisions sold had a 4K resolution.

To get closer to a more approximate total, according to a study presented last year by the GFK consultancy, the total calculation would be about six million UHD televisions sold in Spain.

Taking into account that on January 1, 2020, there were 47,329,981 inhabitants in Spain and assuming some things such as that babies are not going to buy a PS5, that there are houses with more than one television and that many bars and establishments buy these devices , the percentage of people who could enjoy the new generation of game consoles is quite close.

Some functionalities such as ray tracing, which does not depend on the technology included in the television, can make a small difference, but not all new generation games will bring this rendering technology.

Something similar happens with another of the advances, the support for refresh rates of 120Hz, double that of the previous generation.

From a practical point of view, the movement is much smoother, something highly valued in competitive multiplayer games.

But, as with 4K, if the console is not accompanied by a current monitor or a high-end television that supports more than 60Hz, there will be no difference.

So, if you want to make the generational leap worthwhile, prepare your checkbook, scratch your pocket and assume that if you were thinking of living a few more years with your high-definition television, you will have to choose between it or the new game console.
