Twitter networks will no longer allow certain news to be retweeted
Twitter networks will ask you if you want to read an article if you retweet it without opening it
Twitter has announced that, after analyzing the results of its experiment to encourage the use of quoted tweets, it has decided
that the retweets will work normally again
.
The idea of the company was to make sure that users read the posts beyond the headline, but it seems that their plan did not work as expected.
In October, in part to prepare for the US election, the firm began adding an extra step when it came to retweeting.
Thus, for example, users came across a message that encouraged them to read the news they wanted to share or to add their impressions in their own tweet (which, if left empty, would work like a traditional retweet).
In this way, as they explain in a thread, after "learning from this experience" the functionality will return to its original form.
Their aim was to "encourage more thoughtful amplification", but they do not believe this has happened in practice.
According to their data, the use of the quoted tweets increased, but "45% of them included single-word statements and 70% had fewer than 25 characters."
In addition, although the use of this tool increased, there was an overall 20% drop in sharing, both with quotes and with classic retweets.
"We believed that this change (...) would increase the likelihood that people would add their own ideas, reactions and perspectives to the conversation," laments the social network on its blog.
Despite this, from Twitter they assure that they will continue working to ensure that the amplification of the messages has more analysis by the users.
This, they explain, requires several solutions and some will be more effective than others.
In this sense, they consider that encouraging the reading of articles makes it more informed when they are shared.
