Disney +: a price hike announced for February -

Geeko

From February 23, 2021, the subscription to the Disney + streaming service will see its price increase in Europe, from 6.99 euros / month to 8.99 euros / month.

An increase in prices that the platform justifies by integrating an offer intended for an adult audience, with films from the Fox catalog, recently acquired by Disney.

Several cinema classics should join the Disney + catalog, including

Die Hard

,

Logan

, the

Planet of the Apes

saga

and

Alien

.

Several series from the Fox catalog are also expected to join the streaming platform, including

Modern Family

.

Disney Star appearance

The price increase will therefore go hand in hand with a larger catalog but also the introduction of a new branding in the app, with a dedicated channel called Disney Star, which will be similar to a Hulu internationally.

“We want to copy the success of our Disney + strategy by using this platform to deliver content that we already own under an international brand, Star,” explains Bob Chapek, CEO of the group.

According to him, Hulu was not sufficiently well known outside the United States to be launched internationally.

Bringing together all the brands in a single application therefore made perfect sense.

Still some gray areas

Disney has not yet specified whether the content of its Hulu platform will be integrated into its Disney Star offer in Europe.

Also owned by the American group, Hulu has more than 38 million paying subscribers in the United States.

The platform has made a name for itself in particular for its successful series

The Servant Scarlet

.

In the United States, Disney +, Hulu and ESPN will continue to coexist but Disney will offer a pack bringing together all the content at a monthly price of $ 18.99.

Disney + now has more than 86 million paying subscribers internationally and is positioned as a serious rival for Amazon Prime and Netflix.
