The Dutch VDL Bus & Coach is developing a new generation of electric city buses, the company reports Tuesday.
The new bus will be presented in 2021 and will be available on the market in four length variants.
Thanks to the use of lighter materials, the side wall of the new generation VDL Citea is now 15 percent lighter.
The weight savings, in combination with better energy management and an optimized streamline, should contribute to a 30 percent lower energy consumption.
"Despite the fact that the bus industry is facing strong headwinds due to the corona crisis, we have continued with full commitment to the development of this new public transport platform," says Willem van der Leegte, president of the VDL Groep, the parent company of VDL. Bus & Coach.
The new VDL Citea will roll off the production line in 2021 in the Netherlands and Belgium.
The first VDL Citea was presented in 2013.
There are now around 750 electric buses on the road in ten countries, giving the company a market share of approximately 20 percent.
