  • Security The Government alerts about a serious security problem in Windows: this is how you can fix it

If you are a Windows 10, Windows Server, Internet Explorer 11 or Microsoft Edge user, you should update these products to the latest version.

This is recommended by the National Cybersecurity Institute, which has issued a "critical alert" of importance 5 (the highest of all) after Microsoft has published the existence of 104 vulnerabilities, 16 of them critical, affecting most of its products.

"Some of the main critical vulnerabilities could allow a cybercriminal to escalate privileges and cause memory failures in Internet Explorer 11 and Edge (HTML-based), as well as execute malicious code remotely in the file system in Windows 10 network. Vulnerabilities can also cause denial of service, information disclosure, circumvention of security measures, identity theft (spoofing) and manipulation (tampering) ", says the Incibe alert.

Some vulnerabilities about which Microsoft has not yet provided technical details, thus trying to prevent them from being exploited by cybercriminals.

Top Microsoft Products Affected by Vulnerabilities

The main products affected by Microsoft's vulnerabilities would be:

  • Windows 10

    (versions 20H2, 1607, 2004, 1903, 1909, 1809 and 1803);

  • Windows Server

    (versions 2012, 2012 R2, 2012 Server Core, 2016, 2016 Server Core, 2019, 2019 Server Core);

  • Windows 8

    (versions 8.1 and RT 8.1).

  • Internet Explorer 11

    in all previous versions of Windows

  • Microsoft Edge

    (EdgeHTML-based) (only for affected versions of Windows 10).

Other Microsoft products affected by vulnerability

In addition to the programs described above, Microsoft would have detected vulnerabilities in other of its products.

However, these are not critically appraised, as they also require attention for "being especially sensitive to being used by cybercriminals, warns the Incibe.

In this sense, the following programs would also be affected.

  • Microsoft Edge (Chromium-based),

  • ChakraCore,

  • Microsoft Exchange Server,

  • Microsoft Dynamics,

  • Microsoft Windows Codecs Library,

  • Azure Sphere,

  • Windows Defender,

  • Microsoft Teams.

How to solve it

Fortunately, most of the users will have the automatic updates installed by default for these programs.

In case the update fails or the update is not automatically activated, it is always possible to consult the Microsoft security update guide from which you can download the patches for the affected products.

"It is recommended to update the affected software to the latest version as soon as possible and activate automatic updates if they are not being applied by default", concludes the Incibe.
