The European Commission is warning digital platforms against the emergence of a new round of cyber attacks taking advantage of the second wave of the coronavirus, reports ZDNet.

Malicious campaigns exploiting the coronavirus pandemic are already on the rise and this may just be the beginning.

Malicious people could once again exploit the climate of alert and fear generated by the second wave of the coronavirus to try to scam Internet users with so-called miracle products.

Others could try to collect personal data from people by sending them phishing emails playing on fear related to the health crisis.

"We know from experience that fraudsters consider this pandemic as an opportunity to deceive European consumers", underlines Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders.

The latter encourages digital platforms such as Amazon, AliExpress, Cdiscount, Google, Facebook or even Microsoft to be “more agile during the second wave currently hitting Europe”.

"The viral spread of disinformation linked to the pandemic endangers the health and safety of our citizens," said Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton in a press release.

Vigilance is essential

But Internet users must also be more careful and critical of miracle products and tips against the coronavirus, as well as of emails and texts they receive from strangers.

The phishing campaigns and attempted scams against the background of Covid-19 were particularly numerous during the first wave.

Many false information sites on the pandemic have thus emerged, disseminating false information and offering false miracle solutions in order to recover personal data.
