• Review: The LG GX is the best OLED TV for movie lovers

  • Review: The Samsung QLED Q95T is one of the best 4K TVs of 2020

Let's make it clear from the front line the only bad thing about the 48-inch Sony A9 Series: it doesn't have HDMI 2.1, so if you're a regular gamer, it's not 100% ready for PS5 and Xbox Series X. But if this does not matter to you, this TV is perfect for those who do not want something huge in their home.

Who can't love a 65-inch OLED TV in the middle of the living room?

Well look, I know a few people who do not want something like that because they have a nice piece of furniture or because the television is something secondary or because they have a certain type of decoration idea or because they want it for the room or study, with smaller walls.

So no, not everyone wants the largest possible television in their home.

The problem is that, for at least 5 years, TVs below 55 inches were no longer considered for the high-end range and if you wanted a 43 or 48-inch screen, you had to settle for something less up to date.

And that's exactly what the 48-inch A9 Master Series comes to solve.

Only LG has a product to compete at this size, the 48-inch CX, and both are almost identical in performance.

Discreet and beautiful, the 48-inch A9 Master Series

We are facing a fantastic OLED, well calibrated, with 4K resolution, with an impressive depth of colors, very fine, with quite decent speakers despite this, with a simple operating system (Android TV), Dolby Vision, compatibility with all apps most popular streaming services with hardly any add-ons that make movies look like soap operas.

A full-fledged cucumber that costs a paste, of course: 1,799 euros without a discount, what other larger OLEDs cost.

Although it is already better known what it means to have an OLED television, it never hurts to repeat that it is a type of panel for televisions, monitors and mobiles that illuminates the millions of pixels that make up the entire matrix one by one.

Put another way, when something is black, the pixel is off, so this allows for much better contrast in the image.

Next to it, the LED panels, which illuminate the pixels in groups, never achieve that pure black image.

It is a technology with its strong points (more vivid colors) and weak points (less maximum brightness), but it has become the favorite of many due to the image quality and contrast that is achieved.

A detail of the contrast offered by an OLED

This year's Sony OLEDs are certainly on par with LG's best panels.

The A9 Series barely has minor differences, only those that Sony or LG establish in the calibration and color reproduction modes.

Sony justifies its slightly higher prices for the somewhat more advanced processor, the X1 Ultimate, and its more precise color management and pixel by pixel.

This same processor is in charge of rescaling and better processing the images in lower resolution.

From Save Me Deluxe to Friends on Netflix, the X1 Ultimate does a fabulous and accurate job, without adding weird artifacts or more grain than was due to shows or movies from a few years ago.

You are not going to get all its performance watching DTT, I already told you that, but if you have a Blurays player, you are going to freak out.

You don't need to have it to see high-quality content, wow.

The A9 Series has everything from Netflix to Disney +, going through all the other streaming platforms in between.

Its support for Dolby Vision and HDR + 10 allows any content on them to be viewed at its best in terms of color and resolution standards.

The command is tremendously complete, but maybe something big

To this, add that anything that is not compatible can be executed or played through Apple AirPlay 2 or via Chromecast, as it has one integrated inside.

Launching something from your mobile and that works on TV is very simple and it is only necessary that both devices work on the same network.

The only thing that the A9 Series does not seem to get along with is Dolby Atmos, because although my soundbar is compatible and I have connected it through eARC, no platform recognizes this sound standard when it comes to playing movies or series.

If, like me, you have connected a console to it, you will realize that the Game mode also works like a charm, with the exception that I indicated above: neither PS5 nor Xbox Series X will have VRR, Freesync 2 or 4K / 120FPS activated.

Its HDMI ports, curiously, are compatible with the HDCP 2.3 standard, the same one that HDMI 2.1 uses, so you should not have a problem using, for example, an eARC device to pass image and sound without any compression.

To put one more drawback, although this is somewhat unfair as it is a problem of all modern televisions, their speakers distort bastne when you raise the volume above 50 points of the maximum of 100. It is the price to pay for very thin and light televisions, they don't have decent speakers inside.

If you put a sound bar in front, you cover the bottom of the TV

I have no doubt that even a regular video game player will be more than satisfied if he gets his hands on a 48-inch A9 Master Series, as it doesn't look like many video games currently use HDMI 2.1.

We will see in the future.

For those looking for a television that is like a movie screen, if not better;

but do not measure what a cinema screen is, this television is the best that you will be able to have in the living room, bedroom or study.

It's expensive, of course, but it's what OLEDs have in general.

And also, this is one of the very few high-end televisions that have a reduced size, which adds a certain extra cost to the price due to its condition of being practically unique.

But if you are determined that this is what you need, I have no doubt that you have a more than ideal screen for the entire decade ahead.
