WhatsApp has just exceeded 100 billion messages exchanged daily across the world.

The announcement was made this Thursday by Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, during a conference on the group's quarterly results, reports

.

This volume of messages had already been reached on the last New Year's Eve.

But it was then a record, while the vertiginous figure now represents cruising speed.

Two billion users

When the app was acquired by Facebook in 2014, it had 500 million users.

At that time, 50 billion messages were exchanged on a daily basis.

Six years later, 2 billion people use messaging.

The largest market is in India, where WhatsApp leads all other apps,

.

This year we've all relied on messaging more than ever to keep up with our loved ones and get business done.

We are proud that @WhatsApp is able to deliver roughly 100B messages every day and we're excited about the road ahead.

Will Cathcart, CEO of WhatsApp, relayed the good news on Twitter.

He recalled that this year had been special.

“We have all relied more than ever on messaging to stay in touch with our loved ones and work,” he said, referring to the coronavirus pandemic and the various periods of confinement in most countries.
