Developer platform GitHub has taken the YouTube download program Youtube-DL offline after the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) filed a copyright claim.

That's on the creators' GitHub page.

The software allowed users to download videos from YouTube.

“The source code is intended to bypass technical measures from services such as YouTube to copy and distribute music videos and audio files without the owner's consent,” writes the RIAA.

At the request of the interest group, the GitHub page has been taken offline.

The makers of the software can still object.

If successful, the service may be resumed.

YouTube DL was one of the most popular projects on GitHub. A number of people tweeted after taking the page offline that the program was not only used illegally. For example, internet archivists and video makers themselves use the service to make backups.
