On October 26, 1880, Hero of the Soviet Union, Lieutenant General of the Engineering Troops Dmitry Karbyshev was born. He was a participant in two world wars and was considered a major expert in fortification. In 1941, Karbyshev, unconscious, was captured by the Nazis. The Nazis tried to persuade him to go over to their side, but Karbyshev refused to serve the enemy. After that, he was kept in various prisons and concentration camps of the Third Reich. In 1945, Dmitry Karbyshev died from torture in the Mauthausen concentration camp.
